Program: Joseph Haydn (1732 – 1809): Symphony No. 14 in A major, Hob. I/14 Symphony No. 88 in G major, HOB. I/88 Symphony No. 89 in F major, HOB. I/89 Anton Kraft (1749 – 1820): Grand Duo concertante for Violin and Cello in d minor, op. 3, No. 1 Joseph Haydn's relationship with the members of the Esterházy court orchestra under his command was characterized by collegiality, trust, and not least, true friendship. How this was reflected in his music – for example in various passages marked 'Solo' in his symphonies – how friendships were maintained, but also how trust was broken, is told in Haydn2032's 26th project, which centers on musicians Anton Kraft and Johann Tost. After Joseph Weigl and Franz Xaver Hammer, Kraft was from 1778 to 1790 (first) cellist and even composition student of Haydn, who in turn composed his second cello concerto for him and served as godfather to several of the musician's children. Tost, on the other hand, was the second violin leader from 1783 to 1788 and had already begun to trade in works by Haydn in 1787, soon revealing quite questionable business practices. For example, Tost commissioned six symphonies from Haydn, of which the master only completed two after his business partner apparently owed him a substantial part of the agreed advance payment: symphonies No. 88 and 89.
