Beethoven's Vision of an Enlightenment

Description

For the festive season finale, the Festival Strings Lucerne welcome the young violinist Daniel Lozakovich, who is already counted among the greats of his field and celebrates successes worldwide. At the center is Camille Saint-Saëns' Violin Concerto No. 3 in B minor – a work of virtuosic brilliance, lyrical elegance, and classical balance. The program forms a bridge between Vienna and Paris. Anton Eberl, a Viennese contemporary of Beethoven, opens the evening with an opera overture that, besides dramatic energy – typical for Eberl – also reveals French esprit. In the second part follows Beethoven's ballet music The Creatures of Prometheus, whose Prometheus theme later also shaped the final movement of the famous Eroica Symphony. This very Prometheus theme surprisingly forms the bridge to Saint-Saëns, who dedicated a homage to his idol Beethoven with the Variations sur un thème de Beethoven op. 35, using the same opus number as Beethoven for his Eroica Variations on a theme from The Creatures of Prometheus.
