Description

At the center of this Beethoven evening are the third piano concerto and the choral fantasy – two works that make Beethoven's dramatic power and his utopian idea of community experienceable in different ways. The third piano concerto is in C minor, the key that often represents tension, energy, and existential drama in Beethoven's music. The slow movement contrasts the heroic tone with a detached, almost otherworldly calm. In the choral fantasy, the perspective broadens. The work begins with a piano solo and gradually grows into a large tutti with orchestra, soloists, and choir. At the end stands a hymn to "peace and joy" – an early form of the joy anthem that Beethoven would later make world-famous in the Ninth Symphony. David Fray, one of the most distinguished pianists of our time, will perform.
