Battlerap is much more than a competition: it is a creative exchange full of wordplay, technique, humor, and personality. Each encounter is created in the moment, fueled by the energy of the audience, and shows how powerful language can be. RISING TIDE offers a stage for newcomers and established artists and has established itself as a fixture in the northern German battlerap scene. Here, hip-hop culture is not just presented but lived.
Exclusively at the Harbour Front Literature Festival, RISING TIDE invites you to a two-part event series. On two evenings, special guests meet and showcase an art form that has long gained attention far beyond the hip-hop scene. Visitors can expect battlerap in special configurations – live, unique, and only to be experienced at the Harbour Front Literature Festival.
When the words sit, the punchlines hit, and the crowd goes along, it becomes clear: the tide is rising. And this time, it comes from Hamburg. Battlerap regularly fills venues across Germany, is increasingly present online, and mobilizes a steadily growing fan base. Rafael Schmauch – pioneer of the scene and long-time protagonist – opens a window behind the scenes of this special linguistic art in his book "Battlerap: The Art of Insulting." He traces the development of an art form that has thrived for two decades on linguistic sharpness, performative intelligence, and ritualized competition. At the same time, he reveals exactly how battlerap works and discusses sharp angles, crashing punchlines, and convincing performances.
