She was the expert in caring for injured birds of prey and owls: Veronika von Stockar (1919–2010). As a young widow, she first cared for an injured kestrel in 1957. This developed into her lifelong passion as well as her great skill and knowledge, which was honored 50 years later with an honorary doctorate from the University of Zurich. The bird of prey station Berg am Irchel (ZH), founded by her, is now operated by the PanEco Foundation and is considered a leading facility for the care and rehabilitation of injured and ill birds of prey and owls in Switzerland. "Afternoon Rain of Buzzards" conveys the impressive life and work of this "Grande Dame" through facts and anecdotes. It highlights her pioneering achievements in bird of prey care as well as her role as an advocate for birds of prey in the tension field of agriculture, ecology, veterinary medicine, falconry, and law, and provides insight into her professional and personal network. Portraits of birds cared for at the station complement the biographical-historical texts and shed light on the peculiarities, needs, and threats of important native bird species.
