Background

Description

Background is a dance performance at Kulturraum Thalwil that combines South African Pantsula dance from Johannesburg's township of Katlehong with Swiss dance theatre. Created by Elfi Schaefer-Schafroth and the Fishers of Man Arts Project, it tells stories of heritage, resistance, and empowerment through energetic and poetic dance. The production features seven Pantsula dancers processing themes of poverty and exclusion, contrasted with a solo performance reflecting on personal history. The choreography creates a dialogue between different dance languages, symbolized by Martin Schäfers' stage design of a net representing landscapes and borders.
