Playful spirit and musical curiosity have characterized the Basel Chamber Orchestra since its founding in 1984. With great energy and stylistic openness, the musicians dedicate themselves to a broad repertoire – from early music on historical instruments to Viennese classical and contemporary works. This creates a lively, distinctive sound, driven by enthusiasm for making music together at the highest level. Based in Basel with subscription series at the Stadtcasino and its own rehearsal and performance venue Don Bosco, the ensemble enjoys a high international reputation. Over 100 concerts per season regularly take the orchestra to major European stages and renowned festivals. Awarded the Swiss Music Prize in 2019, the Basel Chamber Orchestra impresses with artistic excellence and perseverance. Projects like Haydn2032, the recording and performance of all symphonies by Joseph Haydn up to 2032, conducted by Giovanni Antonini, or the recording of late Haydn masses under the direction of René Jacobs, demonstrate a deep passion for long-term, creative engagement. Inspiring partnerships with artists such as Sol Gabetta, Christian Gerhaher, Alexandra Dovgan, Vilde Frang, and Collegium Vocale Gent are repeatedly formed. Artistic leadership is provided by concertmasters and conductors like René Jacobs, Heinz Holliger, Delyana Lazarova, and Pierre Bleuse. An award-winning discography and diverse educational formats complement the orchestra’s vibrant activities.
