With the Arthur Waser Prize, the Lucerne Symphony Orchestra has been supporting young soloist careers since 2013. Rarely has this happened at such an early stage as with the Arthur Waser Prize 2026: The pianist Martina Meola, born in Milan in 2012, won the «Jeune Chopin» competition in 2025 and impressed juror Martha Argerich so much that she invited her to the piano festival «Le Piano Symphonique». Martina Meola's performance as Arthur Waser Prize winner with the Lucerne Symphony Orchestra offers the chance to encounter a rising star in Chopin's second piano concerto. The work combines lyrical intimacy, elegant virtuosity, and romantic sensitivity – and lets the piano speak again and again like a human voice. A discovery of a completely different kind is Erich Wolfgang Korngold's Symphony in F-sharp major. Korngold, who won several Oscars as a Hollywood composer after emigrating in the 1930s, sought to break away from this reputation with this powerful, glaringly dark symphony. At the same time, he incorporated his own music from pirate and other films. As film music without film, the work thus fits into the vivid sound worlds of this season. On the podium is John Storgårds, who has made a name for himself internationally with discoveries and innovative programs and conducted the Lucerne Symphony Orchestra for the first time during the Corona period. The Arthur Waser Prize Winner Concert takes place at the KKL Lucerne and presents the talented pianist Martina Meola, who won the «Jeune Chopin» competition in 2025. Under the direction of John Storgårds, the concert will feature both Chopin's romantic piano concerto and Korngold's impressive symphony.
