Description

"The Song of the Earth" by Gustav Mahler is undoubtedly one of the most captivating and moving works of the early 20th century. Created between 1908 and 1909, he composed a piece about confronting the only inevitable thing in life: death. Mahler experienced a year of crisis marked by setbacks such as the death of his daughter, the diagnosis of an incurable heart defect, and the forced resignation as director of the Vienna Court Opera. The piece is divided into six songs, whose texts were taken from the "Chinese Flute," a collection of ancient Chinese poems, and are alternately performed by the two singers with the orchestra. Under the direction of chief conductor Josep Vicent, the arrangement for a small ensemble by Arnold Schönberg, completed by Rainer Riehn, is performed. Despite the smaller ensemble, it succeeded in maintaining the texture and impact of the original and giving the two soloists the space to showcase their skills. PARTICIPANTS

The argovia philharmonic presents a chamber version of Gustav Mahler's masterpiece in the St. Martin's Church in Rheinfelden. Under the direction of chief conductor Josep Vicent, the moving songs are performed by vocal soloists from the region.
