Description
What does sex work mean and how is it socially classified? What ideas of morality, work, and gender shape the approach to it to this day? And how have legal, social, and cultural perspectives changed over time? Since the 19th century, sex work has increasingly been regulated, controlled, and morally judged: by medicine, police, church, or women's movements. To this day, different positions face each other: while some understand sex work as an expression of structural violence and patriarchal conditions, others emphasize the self-determination of sex workers and demand their recognition as gainful employment with corresponding rights. This controversy has not only shaped the living realities of sex workers but also societal ideas of sex work itself. Historians Sarah Baumann and theologian Nathalie Eleyth jointly explore how the view of sex work has changed, which narratives still persist today, and what this means for the present. Moderation: Christina Caprez, sociologist, historian, and journalist
