The band from Toronto, Canada, with its two frontmen Steve 'Lips' Kudlow and Robb Reiner and bassist Chris Robertson, can boast not only an impressive career with many highlights — but also well-known difficulties — and has profoundly influenced countless world-famous musicians, from Metallica to Slayer and beyond. Their latest studio album rightly bears the programmatic title 'One And Only': Anvil are and remain unique, shaping the current metal scene in a similarly impressive way as at the beginning of their career. How do they succeed? With straightforward metal driven by cutting riffs and catchy hooks, which the musicians continue to celebrate with admirable ease and great passion. "We are more similar to our old style than we have been in years," characterizes frontman Lips Kudlow the new record, adding: "We have abandoned all our more modern aspects, especially the 90s version of Anvil. There are no sexual themes and no thrash-speed songs like on previous albums." Released on 28.06. via AFM is 'One And Only', the band's 20th studio album. Already on April 5, 2024, the first single/video 'Feed Your Fantasy' was released, and on May 10, a second track 'Truth is Dying' will be released. So, one can rightly speak of a thoroughly typical Anvil album. With their usual confidence, Chris Robertson and drummer Robb Reiner keep the tempo high and provide the perfect rhythmic foundation for their guitar-playing singer Lips. Could a song be more characteristic of Anvil than the bold 'Dead Man's Shoes'? Hardly. Will the neck muscles be as heavily strained during 'Fighting For Your Rights' or 'Blind Rage' as with the great Anvil classics of the glorious eighties? Guaranteed! At the same time, 'One And Only' would be incomplete without the usual small surprises for fans: With the mid-tempo track 'Feed Your Fantasy' and its accompanying clip, Anvil presents a shuffle-based, somewhat unusual number for them, while 'Heartbroken' with its slow groove creates a doom-like, sometimes Sabbath-like atmosphere. Lyrically, 'One And Only' offers top-notch Anvil entertainment: Lips is considered one of the most imaginative and interesting storytellers in metal, with pointed word choices that get straight to the point and — as in 'Condemned Liberty' and 'Fight For Your Rights' — sometimes even put a finger on the wound. He says: "In 'Condemned Liberty', it's about losing all rights due to the abuse of free speech and opinion. And 'Fight For Your Rights' is about the music industry ripping off musicians." Lips knows what he's talking about: Anvil has experienced the rough, often merciless side of the music industry multiple times, without losing their idealism, motivation, and energy. 'One And Only' was produced by Martin 'Mattes' Pfeiffer (e.g., U. D. O.) and Jörg Uken at his 'Soundlodge' studio, as were the previous four albums. Pfeiffer and Uken are also Lips' "...first choice, the one and only. As always, Mattes and Jörg did a great job selecting our best performances and ensuring the album has top-notch sound. Great guys who understand the band and know exactly what suits us best."
