In the near future: Sascha sits alone in a boutique. His friends have locked him in because he is accused of a crime they demand accountability for. Some time ago, they welcomed a new member into their circle of friends. The android Charly lived as a "test run" with Sascha's friend Jan and brought him financial ease. He initially introduced new ideas for ventures, appeared surprisingly accessible, and was liked by everyone. Only Sascha remained skeptical and didn't trust Charly, "who wasn't human". It was less his technical physicality that caused discomfort than the revealing and deepening of societal gaps and abysses that reproduce within the circle of friends. The readers know from the start that it will end badly, but what actually happened then? How did the escalation come about? And what role did Sascha play in all of this? Narratively committed to the present, he writes "just now" a retrospective that not only recapitulates recent events but also recalls his own childhood. An overall picture emerges through descriptions of the precarious situation with his wife Elodie and the children, and the circle of friends shaped by different social backgrounds. Sebastian Schmidt's debut novel Powerschaum is science, but more social fiction.
Sebastian Schmidt, born in 1983, grew up in and around Heidelberg. He writes prose, poetry, and essays. As a member of the network Other Writers Need to Concentrate, he critically engages with the topic of care work and writing. His texts have been translated into Czech, French, and English. Sebastian Schmidt lives in Würzburg.
