In English with German subtitles – Strobe lights will be used during the performance! "She was so attractive! Many felt irresistibly drawn to her, sometimes to their downfall, sometimes to their own liberation." They came out of curiosity, for the city was a promise. Some sought refuge from the violence of patriarchal societies, as Berlin promised them freedom, the possibility of self-design. Or did those who came create this promising Berlin? In Amigues Adios by Bishop Black, five performers embark on a quest for those who shaped queer Berlin over the years and made it a place for life beyond the conservative boundaries of sexual identity and racial identity. For those who came then, Berlin was a kind of harbor. Here they could come ashore, as rents were cheap and where one came from mattered less than the here and now. Walking along the pier, anyone could reinvent themselves, and no one knew what pain lay in the past. Here, one could shed outdated roles and negotiate new forms of coexistence. There were resistances; precarity was part of freedom; some broke under violence and cold. But for a moment in history – so unexpected and unlikely given the German pasts – they made Berlin an open city. Yet fear is on the rise again. And so the protagonists of Amigues Adios pay tribute to the Black queer Berliners who had the courage to make the city a promise. They honor them to find the strength to continue in this surreal and burlesque dance through the ages. They celebrate to taste the flavor of fearlessness and self-determination once more. Amigues Adios is Bishop Black's fourth work at Ballhaus Naunynstraße after the solo performance Becoming My Body (2019), Re-Searching Joy (2022) as part of the akademie der autodidakten, and their directorial debut Flight of the Canaries (2023).
