Description

Surrealism challenged art from the unconscious. Giacometti responded to this between 1930 and 1935 with novel, often violently or sexually charged objects. With these, he provided the unconscious with footholds in three-dimensionality. In his mature work, he returned to the human figure and revolutionized it: instead of classical volume, he created extremely slender figures that made emptiness perceptible. Their cracked surfaces reflect his pure perception. What unites the masterpieces of both phases is that Giacometti made the experience of being iconic in them of modernity.
