Addressing War? Singing About and Against War

Description

What role do songs play in war? Lamentations, songs of resistance (e. g., from the Italian Resistenza), and marching songs serve different functions during and after armed conflicts. They create different atmospheres and convey emotions in various ways. In this workshop, we’ll explore—together with choir director Maayan Baram—songs from various contexts and cultures that are sung in connection with armed conflicts or that evoke memories of them. We’ll listen to songs and discuss them before trying them out together as a group. What moods can these songs convey? And what impact can singing have in the context of war and conflict? Participants in this workshop are invited to bring songs that remind them of war contexts. There is no expectation that these songs must be sung (or sung aloud). The workshop will be held in German and English. Schedule
