Rome! The Muslim scholar Omar ibn Said, who was enslaved and brought to America, dreamed of dignity and freedom. In their 2022 world premiere and Pulitzer Prize-winning opera Omar, Rhiannon Giddens and Michael Abels paid musical tribute to him. Jean Sibelius, on the other hand, dreamed of a career as a violinist and once even applied to the Vienna Philharmonic – without success. Instead, the Finn dedicated his only instrumental concerto to his favorite instrument. With its Nordic-rhapsodic tone, the Violin Concerto in D minor is one of the most popular works in the violin repertoire and will be interpreted in Bern by the celebrated Armenian violinist Sergey Khachatryan. The works of the Italian Ottorino Respighi, whose musical dreams lead to Rome, take us south: In Fontane di Roma, Respighi sang of the fountains of the Eternal City; in Pini di Roma, he paid homage to the beauty of the pines – and proved with his tone poems that Italy is not only the land of opera but also a stronghold of symphonic music. The Italian concertmaster Jader Bignamini, among others music director of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, will bring Respighi's music to life with much Italianità.
