To open the new concert season, pianist Jean-Jacques Schmid will perform works by Chopin and Brahms at the 4th Castle Concert. The four ballades for solo piano by Frédéric Chopin, composed between 1831 and 1842, are considered absolute masterpieces of romantic piano music and are among the most technically and interpretatively demanding pieces in the standard repertoire. Chopin is regarded as a pioneer because he was the first to transfer the originally literary and vocal form of the ballade purely to instrumental piano music. In the second part of the program, Brahms' highly virtuosic variations on a theme by Paganini will be performed. Although Brahms initially modestly called them "Studies for Piano," they are among the most difficult piano pieces ever. Instead of merely ornamenting the melody classically, he uses the theme as a framework for extreme finger technique challenges. Clara Schumann aptly called them "Witch Variations" because of their enormous demands! The Bernese pianist Jean-Jacques Schmid, with his many years of concert experience as a soloist and chamber musician with an immense conventional as well as unusual repertoire, is exactly the right pianist for this exciting concert.
