3rd Subscription Concert – The Singing Reed

Description

With Richard Strauss’ Serenade for 13 wind instruments, the argovia philharmonic opens the 3rd subscription concert under the direction of the Spanish guest conductor Virginia Martínez. The then 17-year-old Strauss allegedly composed the work during class – under the school desk, instead of paying attention. Inspired by Mozart's wind serenades, a short romance in andante tempo was created. Next, Strauss’ Oboe Concerto is performed, a chamber music work full of cheerfulness and subtle colors, in which the oboe always stands out prominently. The solo part will be taken by the Spanish oboist Cristina Gómez Godoy. Finally, Amy Beach's Symphony in E minor “Gaelic” is performed, which was premiered in 1896 as the first symphony by an American female composer. In this late romantic work, she combines English, Scottish, and Irish melodies into a colorful symphonic landscape panorama. Program:
