Description
Mahler's Ninth 2nd Symphony Concert The conductor originally scheduled for this concert, Joana Mallwitz, cannot lead the musical performance for a pleasing reason: she recently confirmed her pregnancy. Fortunately, we were able to secure Patrick Hahn, one of the most sought-after conductors of his generation, for this concert. In his last completed work, Mahler looks back at a world on the brink of the afterlife, just a few years before the outbreak of the First World War. Using musical means, the composer not only senses the pulse of society but also processes his very personal pain. For example, Mahler, in his mourning over the early death of his daughter Maria Anna, uses a musical quote from his Kindertotenlieder. Mahler's Das Lied von der Erde simultaneously marks the beginning of a new era and is considered "the first work of New Music" (Alban Berg). And so, Mahler's Ninth is many things at once: a point of culmination and a look ahead, a requiem oscillating between world-weariness and irony—and a touching musical testament.
