Symphony in D minor FWV 48 Constance debut for Selina Ott, the first woman to win the ARD Music Competition in the trumpet category – alongside Karl-Heinz Steffens, former principal clarinet of the Berlin Philharmonic, now an internationally sought-after conductor. The focus is on two concerts that portray the instrument in two very different historical moments. Joseph Haydn's Trumpet Concerto in E-flat major Hob. VIIe:1 (1796) was composed for Anton Weidinger and his newly developed keyed trumpet – with it, a fully chromatic trumpet playing was made possible for the first time; the concerto marks the musical-historical birth of the trumpet as a melodically freely movable solo instrument. Reinhold Glière's Concerto for Coloratura Soprano op. 82, here arranged for trumpet, was originally intended for the human voice and transmits its cantabile, almost vocal character unbroken onto the brass. The framework is formed by two works from the symphonic repertoire. Edward Elgar's Introduction and Allegro op. 47 (1905) for solo quartet and string orchestra processes a melody that the composer captured during a trip through Wales in 1901 – a piece that Elgar later counted among his most successful. César Franck's only symphony in D minor (1888) caused heated debate at its Paris premiere: in the conservatory, the prominently used English horn was considered 'operatic' and unusual in a symphony. Today, the work is considered one of the key pieces of French symphonic music.
Selina Ott comes from an Austrian musical family and learned to play the piano at the age of five. When she started playing the trumpet a year later, she immediately showed extraordinary talent – and found her true passion. As a teenager, she attended the gifted program at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna. At 17, she was also a young student at the Karlsruhe University of Music, then studied at the private university in Vienna. The 20-year-old gained international fame in 2018 through the ARD Music Competition. Since then, she has performed worldwide as a soloist with renowned orchestras and regularly appears at major festivals and concert stages. Currently, she dedicates herself, alongside her international concert activities, to innovative chamber music projects and the further development of her trumpet repertoire. Selina Ott is considered one of the most exciting trumpeters of her generation and sets new standards in classical concert performance with virtuosity and freshness.
